How we price a project, with real numbers
Fixed fees, a day rate, three options and the payment terms we never skip. Everything, in the open.
The question we are asked most often by younger designers is not about typefaces or tools. It is: how much should I charge? It is a hard question, and most studios keep their answer secret. We think that makes the whole industry worse. So this is exactly how Folio prices a project, with real numbers.
We do not charge by the hour
We used to. Most studios start that way. But hourly pricing has a strange effect: it rewards being slow. The better and faster we got, the less we earned. It also makes clients nervous, because they never know what the final bill will be.
Today, we charge a fixed price for each project, agreed before we start. The client knows exactly what they will pay. We know exactly what we need to deliver. And if we find a faster way to do something well, we benefit from it.
A client is not buying our hours. They are buying the result, and the years it took us to get good at it.
